Weekend Escape: Top 7 Hidden Bars Across London

When I was stuck in the office grind on a Tuesday, my friend Maya sent me a text: “There’s a speakeasy in the basement of a bakery in Camden that serves gin like a magician.” That night, I found myself in a dimly lit room with a wooden bar, a chalkboard menu, and a bartender who knew every botanically‑infused spirit by heart. The experience was so memorable that I started mapping London’s best‑kept watering holes, and the list below reflects what I discovered.

1. The Hidden Door in Camden Town

Address: 12‑14 Camden High Street, London. The entrance is a plain brick wall behind a bakery that sells sourdough on the street. Inside, a single barstool and a chalkboard list of gin‑based cocktails. The signature drink, “The Baker’s Gin,” mixes London Dry gin, lemon, honey, and a splash of absinthe. It costs £12 and takes about 5 minutes to prepare. The bar closes at 2 a.m.; after that, the space turns into a quiet lounge for locals.

2. The Secret Cellar in Shoreditch

Hidden under a laundromat on Brick Lane, this cellar bar is accessed through a laundry machine that turns into a door. The interior is a low-lit, brick‑lined room with a single bar. The menu features craft beers on tap, including a 4‑week‑old IPA that costs £6.50. The staff are friendly, and the bar often hosts live acoustic sets on weekends. The cellar closes at 1 a.m., so plan to arrive before midnight for the best selection.

3. The Speakeasy in Southwark

Located in an old post office on Borough Market, the bar is behind a false wall that slides open when you say “London.” The décor is 1920s‑inspired, with velvet armchairs and a brass cocktail shaker. The “Sewer Sour” cocktail is a twist on a classic whiskey sour, using local cask‑aged whisky and a hint of smoked salt. It costs £14, and the bar stays open until 3 a.m., making it ideal for a late‑night drink after a night out in the city.

4. The Rooftop Hideaway in Greenwich

Perched above a laundromat on Greenwich High Road, the rooftop bar is accessible via a ladder that leads to a small terrace. The view of the Thames is unbeatable, especially at sunset. The bar offers a rotating selection of craft cocktails, with the “Greenwich Mule” costing £11. The terrace closes at 10 p.m., so you’ll need to arrive early to secure a seat.

5. The Underground Speakeasy in Notting Hill

Behind a laundromat on Westbourne Grove, a hidden door opens into a narrow, dimly lit corridor that leads to a small bar. The menu is minimal, featuring a single gin cocktail called “The Laundromat.” It costs £9 and is served in a glass bottle with a label that reads “Made in 2024.” The bar is open until 2 a.m.; the bartender is always happy to share stories about the area’s history.

6. The Secret Bar in Hackney

In a basement of a laundromat on Dalston, a door marked “Do Not Disturb” leads to a small, intimate bar. The menu features a variety of small‑batch whiskies and a signature cocktail, “The Dalston Drop,” which costs £13. The bar closes at midnight, so make sure you’re there before the clock strikes.

7. The Hidden Pub in Soho

Located behind a laundromat on Charing Cross Road, the bar is a small, brick‑lined room that looks like a speakeasy. The menu includes a variety of craft beers and a signature cocktail, “The Soho Sour,” which costs £12. The bar is open until 2 a.m. and is known for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff.

After a night of discovering London’s hidden bars, I realized that the city’s underground scene is as diverse as its neighborhoods.
